Karen rejoined the Estate Planning and Trust Administration Group at Gaw Van Male in 2016, after she left GVM in 2006, to care for her elderly parents. Karen has extensive experience in probate court proceedings due to her experience as a staff attorney for the judicial officers in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Probate Division, and the Yolo Superior Court. Karen has appeared in many superior courts throughout the State, including Napa and Solano Superior Courts. She has also appeared before the California First, Third and Fifth District Court of Appeals, as well as, the Federal Court. Her published appellate opinion, Neverkovec v. Fredericks, 74 Cal. App.4th337, was upheld by the California Supreme Court and is widely cited.
Most recently, Karen worked as associate general counsel for the Virginia Tech Foundation, to ensure that donors’ gifts to VT in their wills, trusts or other estate planning vehicles, such as CRUTs and CRATS, were used as they intended. While in Virginia, Karen made court appearances due to her admission to the Virginia Bar and District of Columbia Bar.
Karen was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and raised in Southern California. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History from California State University, Northridge, a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of Southern California, a Master’s in Business Administration from Golden Gate University. She worked as a library administrator at University of California, Davis, prior to pursuing a second career in the law. After earning her Juris Doctor degree from Lincoln Law School in Sacramento in 1994, she opened her own practice in Yolo County.
Karen has been a speaker to various groups on estate planning, as well as, non-profit foundations regarding issues related to donor gifts. She resides in Napa with her husband, Steve, enjoys golf and her granddaughter, Matilda.
