In over 45 years of private practice, Kermit Brashear has served as general and special counsel to a number of entities, advising board of directors and management, negotiating mergers and acquisitions, handling workouts and restructurings, conducting significant litigation and providing general representation. In addition, he assists individual clients requiring business succession ownership plans, and personal estate planning.
From 1979 through 1989, Kermit served as the managing partner of, first, a regional and, then, a national law firm. From 1990 to 2016 he was the equity partner of an Omaha firm. His experience is extensive in supervising the provision of legal services, and in managing organizations and people. He has had primary responsibility for several multimillion dollar divestitures, liquidations and dissolutions involving multiple locations nationally.
Periodically from 1977 through 1990, Kermit acted on special assignment as Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Nebraska responsible for the defense of class action litigation. He has served as counsel to a number of charitable, educational and religious organizations on a local, state and national basis. Active in civic affairs, he is an officer, director or trustee of a number of corporations, foundations and organizations.
Kermit is a past State Chairman of the Nebraska Republican Party, and a past member of the Republican National Committee. He was the second place finisher in the 1986 Republican primary election for Governor of the State of Nebraska.
In 1994, Kermit was elected to the Nebraska Legislature from Omaha. His service was part time as a citizen member of the only one house unicameral legislature in the nation. He continued to maintain his full time practice of law. From 1994 through 1996, Kermit was a Member of the Appropriations Committee. From 1997 through 2005, he was Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and a member of the Education Committee, the Committee on Committees and the Legislative Council. In 2005, Kermit was elected Speaker of the Legislature.
Kermit, a graduate of the University of Nebraska and its College of Law, is a member of the Bars of Nebraska, Colorado and the State Bar of Texas, as well as the Bars of the United States Supreme Court, the United States Tax Court and several United States Courts of Appeal and United States District Courts. From 1969 until he resigned in 1992, Kermit was a member of the American Bar Association. In 1989, he was selected a Fellow of the Nebraska State Bar Foundation.
