About Andrew Atherton

Andrew D. Atherton focuses his practice on Elder and Special Needs law, specifically developing and implementing comprehensive personal estate plans, assisting clients in navigating the estate administration and probate process, and advising the elderly and disabled on how to manage the costs of long term medical care. Andrew has extensive experience in Veterans Administration Benefits, Medicare, Medicaid, guardianship and special needs trusts.In addition, Andrew has been an instructor for the National Business Institute, the North Carolina Bar Association and North Carolina NAELA on Special Needs Trusts, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Guardianship and Medicaid.Andrew was the program planner for the 16th Annual Elder Law Symposium of the North Carolina Bar Association in 2012. He is the immediate past chair of the North Carolina Bar Association, Elder and Special Needs Law Section. As the section chair, Andrew was instrumental in drafting legislation for the North Carolina Legislature during the 2013 session to protect the rights of seniors in need of Medicaid for long term care.In 2000 Andrew completed a clerkship with the Kentucky Supreme Court. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Economics from Western Kentucky University and law degree from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. He is licensed to practice law in Kentucky and North Carolina. Andrew has practiced law in the Asheville area since 2005.Andrew enjoys serving the Western North Carolina community as a member of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina's Professional Advisory Committee, as a member of Make-A-Wish of Central and Western North Carolina’s Mountain Wish Council and as a board member of The Elliana Grace Foundation.
