Biography

John practices in the areas of corporate, business and healthcare law where he assists his clients with a broad range of legal services including formation, contract review and drafting, employment agreement review and drafting, mergers, sales, acquisitions, shareholder agreements, and adding or buying out shareholders. He has assisted varying size businesses in a wide variety of areas including manufacturers, high tech businesses, physician and dental practices, hospitals, professionals, foreign corporations, resorts and others. His clients include STF Precision, Aeroflow, Inc.; Sisters of Mercy; and Beach Mountain Resort. He has assisted with several significant transactions, including the sale of Unicoi County Memorial Hospital, Inc. to Mountain States Health Alliance, the $100 million joining of St. Joseph's and Mission hospitals, the two largest health care and medical providers in western North Carolina, and the merger of Handi-Skills, Inc. with Goodwill Industries of North Carolina. John has helped both InterAct Public Safety Systems and Earth Fare, Inc. with their receipt of private equity funds to achieve business expansion. He also negotiated various business and governmental relationships to allow for the development of the public-private partnership that oversaw the renovation of the Grove Arcade Public Market.His public speeches and panels have included "Beyond Competition: Building Organizational Linkages for Collaboration" for the Community Resource Network, and "Nuts and Bolts of Community Organization" for the Western North Carolina Community Development Program.John serves on the board of directors of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, Inc. for which he previously served as chairman of the board and on the board of directors of the Catherine McAuley Mercy Foundation. He previously served on the board of directors and as President of the Asheville Downtown Association and on the board of directors of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The Asheville Downtown Association has honored John as Volunteer of the Year. He has also been named by Business North Carolina Magazine as Legal Elite in both 2008 and 2014. John was recently elected to serve on the North Carolina Bar Association Business Law Section Council.
